In LOVE. With GARDENS.
You’ve dreamed of having a garden. You’ve watched so many YouTube videos, you’ve purchased the good books, (and maybe a couple of incomprehensible ones,) you’ve strolled through nurseries, gardens, vineyards and made believe it was yours. Right? I know I did. I had already successfully grown vegetables on a 2x3 metre verandah, where winds blew insanely from a salt lake yet the sun beamed down and gave me the greatest gift of all. But that had been when I was much younger.
Then one day, opportunity knocked, and I had the choice to make a beautiful, sun filled space beneath a cold-climate sky, into a garden of my very own… perhaps even a food forest! A space where I could create however my heart desired. I was already well into middle age. My body had definitely sustained a few hard knocks over the years when I had horses, and there were some interesting health issues that I had all but overcome… if I took very good care of myself. But it was the chance of a lifetime. So I did it!
For ten creative, back-breaking and fascinating years the garden evolved. I wrote books, I illustrated, I invited the most divine dogs into my life and I marveled as I ‘watched’ a quarter acre go from ‘potential’ to abundant. Filled with bird species and such plant diversity.
To be fair, the terraces were there, the brickwork was there and the protected and inviting sun trap was waiting to be explored… and to become my storybook garden!
